Recapping the Atlanta Hawks’ weekend matchup with the San Antonio Spurs.

The Atlanta Hawks took on the Spurs in San Antonio in Friday, looking to pick up a win there for the first time since the 1997 season.

Things got off to a pretty good start for Atlanta, with the Hawks holding a lead for most of the first half.

The second quarter was particularly nice, with Trae Young and Cam Reddish helping the Hawks jump out to a double-digit lead, the team scoring 38 points total.

The 3rd quarter couldn’t be any closer to the opposite however, with the Spurs quickly turning that double-digit deficit into a double-digit lead. They went on a 30-9 run to do that, outscoring the Hawks 41-21 in the period.

The tide flipped again after that, with the Hawks clawing back into it, closing the deficit to just four a few times.

This was in large part thanks to Cam Reddish, who really just caught fire for a few minutes, flashing the talent that got him drafted with the tenth pick.

After a few minutes of the Spurs’ lead hanging around 4-6, Trae Young cut the lead to two with under a minutes left, then after a defensive stop, De’Andre Hunter found an open Kevin Huerter for a go ahead three with six seconds remaining.

After an inbound pass that must have taken 4.8 seconds to execute, DeMar DeRozan drew up an iso, drove in, and missed a potential game winner, giving the Hawks their 10th win.

It was an entertaining, streak-busting win for Atlanta, who now own double-digit wins for the first time this year. The final score was 121-120.

Stray Notes:

  • Atlanta scored the final seven points of the game, holding the Spurs scoreless in the final minute-twenty.
  • Trae Young led scorers with 31 points in 34 minutes, making 6 of 9 from deep. Cam Reddish’s 22 was 2nd on the team, marking the third time in his career he’s reached the 20-point mark.
  • Kevin Huerter added 18 points and two blocks to his game-winning shot.
  • Tonight’s win marked the first time the Hawks won two games in a row since the first two games of the season – October 24th and 26th.
  • Atlanta won despite committing 19 turnovers, their 2nd most in a win this season.

The Hawks pull to 10-32, dropping San Antonio to 17-23.

Atlanta returns home to play again tomorrow, looking to win three in row against the Pistons.
