3 Takeaways From the Atlanta Hawks’ Comeback Win Over Clips
By Dallin Duffy
3. Life on the boards
The 2019-2020 Atlanta Hawks have been one of the league’s worse rebounding teams all season, a direct reason they’ve lost a handful of games on the year. Wednesday night was different.
Atlanta pulled down 63 rebounds, easily passing the 56 mark that was their season high. Some of this has to do with the Clippers consistently bricking shots in the 2nd half, but the Hawks also were out-hustling, out-jumping, and overpowering them physically.
That was shown in the 23 offensive boards Atlanta compiled, also easily surpassing their old season best of 16.
The cherry on top was Kevin Huerter‘s offensive board off a missed free throw set up Brandon Goodwin’s game-clinching finger roll.
It’s worth noting that the big night on the boards came with John Collins starting at the four, not the five as he has been. Bruno Fernando, who got the start, pulled down nine rebounds.
Everyone else got involved too. Cam Reddish tied his career high with eight boards, Alex Len got seven in his first game back from injury and Kev Huerter grabbed seven as well.
Finding a way to out-rebound their opponent (or at least keep the battle close) is a clear part of the blueprint to win more games.
The Hawks get tomorrow off as they’ll travel to OKC to take on the Thunder on Friday.
