Should the Atlanta Hawks pursue Montrezl Harrell in 2020 free agency
As the LA Clippers seem to experience growing pains, the Atlanta Hawks have surfaced as a potential suitor for PF/C Montrezl Harrell when his contract expires this summer.
The Atlanta Hawks will be one of the NBA teams with the most money to spend in 2020 free agency. The contracts of Jeff Teague, Treveon Graham, Vince Carter, Chandler Parsons, Evan Turner, and Alex Len will all be coming to an end, freeing up roughly $72,485,000 in spending money.
While some of that money will be saved and dedicated to signing John Collins, Trae Young, and other young players to contract extensions once their rookie deals expire, the Hawks will have a lot of flexibility and could pursue many avenues in 2020 free agency
One name the team has a rumored interest in is Montrezl Harrell of the LA Clippers. For some, it can be difficult to imagine Harrell playing elsewhere. His (as well as Patrick Beverley’s and Lou Williams’) grit and underdog mentality have helped redefine LA Clipper basketball in the post-Lob City era. They worked together for the greatest single game playoff comeback in league history when they defeated the Golden State Warriors in the 2019 postseason.
However, recent developments, as well as the Clippers failing to win easy games has brought the idea of the Clippers retooling before the deadline into question. In the near future, the Clippers might move on from their iconic Lou Williams-Montrezl Harrell pick-and-roll. For as good as the Clippers are, they need consistent playmaking, shooting, wing defense, and more tall players. This means Harrell could be the odd-man-out in LA, as he has a cheap contract and could bring in a big return for the Clippers.
All the Clippers deadline drama aside, Harrell will be seeking a new contract this summer, and Bleacher Report’s Eric Pincus suggests Harrell could be interested in playing in The Big Peach. But, there are a few questions that need to be answered. First, what would Montrezl Harrell bring to the team. Second, how much would he cost? And third, would Harrell be a good fit on the Atlanta Hawks.
