Recapping Trae Young‘s big night against the 76ers on Thursday.

The Atlanta Hawks upset the Philadelphia 76ers on Thursday night, winning with a score of 127-117.

As he has for most of the Hawks’ wins this seasons, Trae Young was at the crux of it, putting up big numbers throughout the night. In particular, he went off in the 1st quarter, going for a points/assists double-double with 14 and 10. He scored or assisted on the Hawks’ first 30 points, helping them build a lead that they would never give up.

Although he didn’t quite get to the 40 assists he was on pace for after the 1st quarter, Trae still manged eight more despite rampant double-teams by the Sixers. He got lucky number 18 fighting thorough a particularly tough double team against two All-Stars in Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons:

He finished with 18, setting a new career-high. His previous best was 17, which he accomplished in November of 2018 against the Clippers.

He’s been great passing the ball all this season, but has been especially hot of late. Since returning from an ankle that cost him two games, Trae has averaged 11.5 assists per game, which would lead the league. He’s up to 9.2 on the season, which is 2nd in the league behind just LeBron James.

His passing somehow took away from his scoring, which was also on display on Thursday night. He put up 39 points, despite going 9-22 from the field. He got to the line 20 times, which was also a career high. He made 18 of them.

Trae finished just three rebounds short of his fourth career triple-double. Speaking of rebounds and career-highs, Trae’s teammate John Collins finished with 20 boards, the second time he’s gone over 20 rebounds, although he didn’t match his career high of 25.

Trae has been hot all season but he’s really heating up lately. He’s close to the NBA’s lead in both points and assists per game, and the team has seen a bump in production because of that. The Hawks have gone 5-4 in their last nine, close to moving out of last place in the Eastern Conference. As of writing, the Knicks, Cavs and Hawks all share a 13-36 record.
