Rapidly reacting to the Atlanta Hawks’ weekend showdown with the Dallas Mavericks.

Atlanta wasted no time tonight, building an early 7-0 then 12-3 lead. Kevin Huerter seemed determined to show that he was snubbed for the Rising Stars Game, draining three threes in the early going. An 8-0 run from Dallas quickly got them back into it, and they took the lead not too long after.

Later on the in the first quarter, Cam Reddish had to exit the game, heading to the locker room after taking an elbow to the face. He did not return. This came with the Hawks already being short-handed, as De’Andre Hunter, DeAndre’ Bembry, Bruno Fernando, and Alex Len all missed the game. The Hawks were losing by double-digits by first quarter’s end.

The Mavericks went on a combined 50-24 run after the Hawks went up 15-5 early on, growing a 16-point 2nd quarter lead. Atlanta trailed 62-49 at the half.

One of the few highlights of the half saw the 43-year-old Vince Carter turn back the clock for a one-handed transition slam:

The Mavs came out of the halftime locker room scorching ,draining shot after shot to extend their lead to 20. They record 25 points in the first half of the 3rd period. Dallas hit bottom on seven threes in the 3rd, scoring 35 in total.

To make matters worse, Trae Young left the game with a sprained ankle, ruled out for a return shortly after.

That left the Hawks without their All-Star, a huge deficit, and just eight healthy players. Young finished with just 12 points and one assist in his 26 minutes.

In the 4th, The Hawks cut the Dallas lead a bit, down from the 29-point lead they had in in the 3rd. The Mavericks won the garbage time battle however, and the went back up, winning by a 23 point margin.

Box Score Notes:

  • Kevin Huerter feeling himself on the night, making six threes, which tied his career most. John Collins lead scorers however with 26 on 11/20 shooting. He added 11 rebounds.
  • Charlie Brown, Jr. found some playing time in the rout, scoring two points in three minutes.
  • The Hawks made just 10 of their 33 attempts from deep. The Mavs made 20 of their 39.

The loss was probably one of the ugliest of the Hawks’ season, which is saying something. They fall to 13-37, and will next play on Monday back home against Boston. Check back here for updates on each player of the Hawk’s ever-growing injury report until then.
