Handing out player grades to the Atlanta Hawks for their performance against the Wizards.

The Atlanta Hawks faced off with the Washington Wizards Friday night, looking to win their 20th game on the season.

We did not the get the advertised match up between two of the league’s premier scorers, Trae Young and Bradley Beal, with Trae Young out with flu-like systems. It was still a meeting between two of the league’s worst team defenses, which showed throughout the game.

After leading for most of the first quarter, the Hawks were not very good at all in the second. They were out-scored 31-23 in the period, with the Wizards finishing the first half on a 13-2 run. Brad Beal lived up to his offensive reputation, scoring 20 first half points on 10 shots.

That run trickled into the third quarter, with the Washington run shooting up to 25-4 between the two halves. Atlanta was their normal self on defense, but looked lost offensively. Simply nothing was working, making the Wizards’ defense look elite.

They finally woke a bit in the second half of the quarter, but had to dig themselves out of a 18-point deficit at that point. The Wizards were far from perfect themselves, leaving the door open for a Hawks comeback. Atlanta cut it to 11 with just under ten minutes to play after a John Collins three.

Despite multiple chances, the Hawks just could not bring it under that. A Cam Reddish block-to-three with 3:50 to go finally brought it back down to single digits. It was a 9-0 run for the Hawks that pulled the Hawks within five.

It was a six point lead for Washington with under a minute left, and a missed three by Cam Reddish basically put the game on ice. The Wizards hit their needed free throws to hold onto the 118-112 win.

When the Hawks’ defense was good, their offense was bad. When their offense was good, their defense was bad.

The Hawks drop to 19-45, 1-2 against the Wizards on the season. They’ll play again tomorrow in Memphis.

Now for the individual portion: player grades are next.
