3 reasons why Clint Capela will fit perfectly with the Atlanta Hawks
By Nate Friesen
1. Trae Young’s passing ability in the pick-and-roll
Definitely the most crucial factor in terms of Capela’s fit with the Hawks is Trae Young’s passing ability. As we saw in Houston, an elite-level passer out of the pick-and-roll like James Harden makes the game super easy for Capela offensively. Trae Young is just as talented as James Harden at making tough passes to rolling bigs in the pick-and-roll and he couldn’t have asked for a better rolling big-man than Capela.
Trae Young is currently second in the NBA in assists at 9.3 per game and the majority of his assists are either to John Collins or De’Andre Hunter in the pick-and-roll or to Kevin Huerter on a kick out for an open three. Now if the Hawks slot Capela in there and run pick-and-rolls with Capela and Collins, this leaves Huerter open for three and Hunter as more of a spot-up three-point shooter in the corner which is more of his strength anyways.
All of what the Hawks do in the coming years is reliant on the brilliance of Trae Young. If Young is able to get the most out of Capela on the offensive end by throwing lobs and slipping passes to him in the pick-and-roll, Capela will fit in perfectly. The same goes for any other players the Hawks draft, sign or trade for in the future. The entire offense of this team is built around Trae Young and it’s on him to ensure the pieces around him thrive in order for the team to reach their full potential.
