Grading the season of Atlanta Hawks center Dewayne Dedmon

The Atlanta Hawks decided not to re-sign Dewayne Dedmon last off-season, even with the center coming off what was by far his best season as a pro. He did earn a big payday from another team, as he signed a 3-year, $40 million deal with the Sacramento Kings a week into free agency.

His time with the Kings was as turbulent as it was short, with Dedmon quickly losing his spot in his rotation and publicly asking for a trade back in January.

A few teams were interested in his services, but it was the Hawks who landed him, making him the second center the team acquired in as many days at the deadline. With the other big man, Clint Capela, sidelined with injury, Dedmon got to step right back into a starting role in his return.

For the most part, he looked more like he did last season than he did in Sacramento, but he wasn’t as consistent either. He returned to Atlanta on February 9th, playing 32 minutes and helping the Hawks beat the Knicks. The 30-year-old veteran scored just ten points, but blocked five shots and grabbed eight boards.

He was even better a night later in Orlando, scoring 14 on 5-9 shooting and adding nine rebounds. After that, he hit a bit of a rough patch, which was disappointing after having such a nice first week back with the team.

Dedmon missed four games with injury as the month turned to March, and in his final four games before the NBA suspended play, he had two good games and two less-than-stellar games.

As a whole, he played in ten games for the Hawks, starting eight, averaging 8.1 points, 8.2 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per contest. His shooting was noticeably down from his last stint in Atlanta, going from 49 percent to 39 percent from the field and 38 percent to 22 percent from three.

Still, he looked promising enough to be the Hawks long-term back up to Clint Capela. He’s a solid rebounder and will hit more than 22 percent of his long-range shots in a larger sample size.

His time in Sac-Town was pretty much a failure, but you have to give him a pretty good grade for his first ten back in Atlanta.

Season Grade: C+
