NBA Mock Draft 4.0 — Warriors Take Wiseman First, Hawks grab LaMelo
By Dallin Duffy
Cleveland has taken a guard in the top-ten in each of the last two drafts, and Darius Garland and Collin Sexton flashed the potential of being a solid backcourt for years to come. With the selection of Edwards, the Cavs can either add to that young backcourt or slide him to the three to complete the starting five.
Kevin Love and Andre Drummond (likely to opt-into player option) would round out that starting five, giving the Cavs an interesting mix of former and future stars. Even with that, the Cavs would be a few years away from contention after the Edwards pick, with the Georgia product likely needing a few years to adapt to the pro game.
Edwards is the near definition of raw talent, and the athletic freak has a lot to work on when it comes to shot selection, consistency, and defense. He has the potential to be the best scorer in the draft and his elite potential as a three-level scorer is going to be tough for any team to leave on the board.
The 18-year-old has a sky-high ceiling, but a basement-level floor as well. It’s a boom-or-bust pick that the Cavs just have to gamble on.
