Atlanta Hawks: Trae Young Among League Leaders In Movement
By Dallin Duffy
Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young traveled the 4th most offensive miles in the league last season.
There’s no doubt that Atlanta Hawks point guard Trae Young is active on offense. With growing resources of advanced stats to help track player movement, we can see just how active he was.
Young ranked fourth in the league in offensive miles traveled, coming in at 1.48 miles for the season. Two Portland guards – CJ McCollum and Damian Lillard – and Devin Booker were the only three players to travel more hardwood on offense.
It’s a sizeable year-to-year improvement for Young, who recorded just 1.37 miles last season in 21 more games played.
The Hawks played with the league’s sixth-fastest pace this season, so it’s not surprising, especially given how much they asked from Trae. The sophomore point guard also ranked 4th in the league in usage rate, 11th in minutes per game, and 16th in overall minutes played.
On the other end of the court, Trae had a sharp decline, perhaps being one factor in explaining his lackluster defense. Despite ranking 4th in offensive distance traveled, he was 10th in overall distance.
This is due to him moving just over a mile on D, outside the top-20 of players. Looking at the top of these rankings will show you that just because you move the most doesn’t make you a good defender, but it’s something to consider when talking Young’s defense.
Back to offense, two other Hawks ranked in the top-50 for offensive miles traveled: John Collins (1.34) and De’Andre Hunter (1.32). Collins’ placement on the list is pretty impressive, given his 25-game suspension early in the season.
Of players who suited up in 45 games or less, Collins ranked third while Clint Capela also showed up in the top-ten.
It’ll be interesting to see if Young continues to rise these rankings in his third season. While he is still improving as a player and athlete, his numbers may go down a bit with a full season of John Collins, and the addition of Capela and their first-round pick this off-season.
