Atlanta Hawks rookies Cam Reddish and De’Andre Hunter were left off the 2019-20 All-Rookie Teams.
The 2019-2020 NBA All-Rookie teams were announced on Tuesday. Ten first-year players were honored, but the Atlanta Hawks’ trio of rookies were left off.
De’Andre Hunter, Cam Reddish, and Bruno Fernando were on the outside looking in, with the latter two being shut out of voting entirely. Hunter, the team’s fourth overall pick in 2019, received 11 votes, effectively putting him in 14th place.
When I discussed the probability of Reddish or Hunter making one of the two teams a few months back, I concluded that neither were likely to make the cut, but Hunter could be close. The voters, however, disagreed, as Hunter’s exclusion wasn’t exactly a narrow one.
As mentioned, he earned 11 points, while Rui Hachimura, the lowest points-getter among selections, had 74 points.
Cam Reddish being completely shut out is also a small surprise, but his extremely lackluster start (and thus, underwhelming season-long numbers) obviously was too much for some voters to overlook.
This rookie class wasn’t great, per se, but it was definitely deep. Hunter and/or Reddish may have seemed like locks for an All-Rookie team until you start to list off other rookies. Even as an Atlanta Hawks fan, I have to say they didn’t do enough to deserve a spot over guys like Tyler Herro, Coby White, or PJ Washington.
I do have a small gripe with the voting, however, as Hunter was definitely better than Darius Garland and RJ Barrett, who somehow got more attention than him. Reddish also deserved at least a handful of votes.
More importantly, these two (along with Fernando), showed enough future potential for fans to be satisfied with their rookie campaigns. Even if they didn’t show it throughout the entirety of their respective rookie seasons, but Reddish and Hunter were top-ten rookies at season’s end.
Were the Atlanta Hawks rookies snubbed?
