Atlanta Hawks: Are the Hawks better or worse at shooting guard?

Shooting Guard

2019 – 2020: Kevin Huerter, Evan Turner, De’Andre Bremby, Allen Crabbe, Tyrone Wallace, Charlie Brown

2020 – 2021: Bogdan Bogdanovic, Kris Dunn, Cam Reddish, Kevin Huerter

The shooting guard spot was one of the positions that the Atlanta Hawks wanted to address the most aggressively this offseason. They were in dire need of players who could create their own shots to take some of the playmaking pressure off of Trae Young.

While Kevin Huerter is a solid spot-up shooter and Cam Reddish made strides in his game, De’Andre Bremby was somewhat of a disappointment in his four years with the Hawks. Averaging 6.2 points per game for his career on .448/.269/.592 shooting splits was not what the front office had anticipated from Bremby when they drafted him with the 21st pick in 2016.

The move for Evan Turner was one that also failed to pan out as he only played in 19 games for the Hawks and retired at the end of the season to join the Boston Celtics coaching staff in hopes of helping to develop their young players for contention.

So how did the Hawks improve in the two spot?

They went out and grabbed one of the most highly touted free agents of the offseason in Bogdan Bogdanovic after a failed sign-and-trade with the Milwaukee Bucks. Signing Bogdanovic works to address the Hawks’ horrendous perimeter shooting problem with as the Serbian shooter comes with a solid shooting percentage. He can create his own shot and has a way of getting crafty in the midrange and around the basket.

While we don’t know what the starting lineup will look like, we can assume that it’ll be Bogdanovic and Cam Reddish in the running to take the floor as starters in the shooting guard position. Reddish who blossomed in his sophomore season will benefit from the competition. Head coach Lloyd Pierce may even start them together. So much remains to be seen but we’ll find out more when the season kicks off in a few weeks.
