The Atlanta Hawks are struggling with the same issue they had last season, the minutes when Trae Young is off the court. They have yet to find a backup point guard who can run the team effectively when Young is resting.

Full credit goes to the Hawks front office for trying to fix this position in the offseason. They signed the defensive master Kris Dunn who is yet to play a game. They also signed coveted free agent Bogdan Bogdanovic, who, before he could fully establish himself fractured his kneecap while bringing the ball up in a freak mid-court incident. As a result, he is out indefinitely.

The third piece of the puzzle was Rajon Rondo, the veteran who was meant to hold the second unit together. He had this role with last year’s champions the Los Angeles Lakers but is yet to show the same ability with the Hawks. Last year’s backup Brandon Goodwin even went past him in the rotation for a while early in the season.

Atlanta Hawks trade proposal with the New Orleans Pelicans.

To summarize the trade, the Hawks would get Lonzo Ball who appears to be on the outer in New Orleans. They have expressed that Ball is available to trade as he is in the final year of his deal and the Pelicans are unlikely to get anything in return for him during free agency. The Hawks also get another floor spacer in Nicolo Melli.

The Pelicans get the veteran Rajon Rondo who has not performed as the Hawks would have anticipated. The Pelicans also get second-year man Cam Reddish as part of the deal.
