The Atlanta Hawks are in the middle of a fairytale run. This team, especially under interim head coach Nate McMillan, has shown character and fight which has led to it going further into the postseason than anyone would have predicted.

A lot of this credit has to go to Trae Young on the floor. He was incredible all season, especially with the number of injuries that the team had to contend with. Once McMillan came onboard and implemented a more structured, systematic playing style, Young flourished.

However, one of the other benefactors of the McMillan move was John Collins. Under Lloyd Pierce rumbling got out that Collins was not happy with the offensive structure of the team. With McMillan in charge, no rumors of unhappiness have surfaced. The issue is that there is still the issue of Collins’ new contract for next season.

The Atlanta Hawks need a presence at power forward like John Collins

When Collins is on his game, he is an irrepressible force. He brings the energy and almost everything seems to work for the man. When he is off, Collins can be truly awful.  Still, he is going to get paid this offseason and if he continues to have these Jekyll and Hyde games, a max contract might be too rich for the Hawks.

Reportedly the Dallas Mavericks have been interested in Collins and they have Kristaps Porzingis who is not happy with his role with the team. He is an interesting prospect to play alongside Clint Capela, so let’s look into why or why not this trade is a good thing for all involved.
