Should the Atlanta Hawks trade for Kristaps Porzingis? Dallas Mavericks point of view

This move is a winner for the Dallas Mavericks in any way that you look at it. Porzingis has the potential to become a dead salary in their system. As he stands 7’3″ and has a good 3-point shot, can protect the rim, and rebounds well, he is always going to have a place in the league.

However, the one-time All-Star has some problems. The first one is that he cannot stay on the court for a full season. The most games he has played in a year is 72, which would have been fine this season but it was when he was a rookie.

Including that season, Porzingis has missed 196 games of a possible 482, including the 2018-19 season where he did not play due to his ACL tear. For a player who is earning more than $100 million over the next three years, missing more than 40 percent of games in your first six seasons is too much.

By replacing Porzingis with Collins, you have a player who will earn a lot less who has stayed on the court a whole lot more. He has no major injury issues to speak of and has experience playing with a high usage point guard and can still put up really good numbers.

This trade makes total sense for the Mavericks but they would have to wait for the Hawks to sign and trade Collins due to him being a restricted free agent this summer.
