The Atlanta Hawks took Skylar Mays with the 50th pick of the 2020 NBA draft. Unfortunately for Mays and the Hawks the two-way player was unable to develop as much as he normally would due to the College Park Skyhawks not taking part in the G-League bubble.
This did not stop the Hawks from extending a two-way qualifying offer to Mays this offseason and then they signed him again as one of their two-way players again this season. The G-League is back meaning that the Hawks will be able to see Mays develop with the Skyhawks.
Mays did have some good moments last season. When the Hawks’ wing depth was stretched so thin with all their injuries, Mays earned himself some decent court time with some good games under the old head coach Lloyd Pierce. However, that would all come to an end just prior to the All-Star break.
The Atlanta Hawks will want to see even more improvement from Skylar Mays
The reason that the Hawks stopped using Mays when their new head coach Nate McMillan took over was not that he made too many errors. Bogdan Bogdanovic returned from injury the day that McMillan took over as coach like a gift.
This would have been the perfect time for Mays to go back to the G-League, which is how the two-way contract benefits teams and players. However, COVID-19 took care of that. Now Mays is going to get the full benefit of being a two-way player and hopefully, the Hawks should see a high level of improvement from the second-year man.
