Atlanta Hawks key to a successful ‘21-22 No. 3: Sometimes, especially in sports, it is better to be lucky than good

We went over how the Hawks could realistically be better themselves and still finish worse in the conference just because of things breaking one way instead of the other. Timing is truly everything and that doesn’t just apply to hitting the open market or being extension eligible at the right time.

They caught a New York Knicks team that was likewise breaking a streak of missing the postseason and a Philadelphia 76ers team that remains a powder keg to this very day.

When they went up against a Milwaukee Bucks team that was mostly healthy and had by and large come up together, things went a little different. They failed to come away with a split when Giannis Antetokounmpo missed two games despite Young suiting up for one of them.

It was simply a bad matchup.

The path could have been different last season and the Hawks could have had homecourt advantage, their stated goal for this year.

What they need most of all, though, is for the chaos that takes place every year in the NBA to do its usual around them. And, from the looks of it, things are off to a good start for last season’s Eastern Conference runners-up.

Ben Simmons returned to the 76ers over the weekend but was spotted practicing with his cellphone in his pocket and away from the team huddle.

Meanwhile, Kyrie Irving of the Brooklyn Nets has refused to be vaccinated resulting in his deactivation until further notice. It isn’t an insurmountable loss for a team that will deploy Kevin Durant and James Harden. But it certainly puts a crack in the armor of the team many see as the favorite, not only in the East but in the entire NBA.
