The Atlanta Hawks had another tough road loss against the red-hot Golden State Warriors. They rode on the back of their superstar Stephen Curry who was unstoppable in the third period. He was able to put on a shootting clinic which buried the team.

The Hawks rested their starters for the final five minutes as they had a game the next night against the Utah Jazz which they lost. The Warriors did the same with the exception of Curry. When McMillan inserted his bench, the Warriors kept Curry on the court as he had 48 points. He sat as soon as he hit the runner to get him his 50th point.

The thing about the Warriors is that they know how to help get Curry into the right places in order to score. While he is a phenominal shooter on his own merits, when he is able to come off a screen to receive the ball withenough space to get the shot off. While Curry does not need much room to shoot, he still needs some.

The Atlanta Hawks need to fix their screening action for Trae Young

When the Hawks set a screen for Trae Young, it is usually Clint Capela who is the man in the pick. He will then roll to the hoop after barely any contact with Young’s defender. This usally means that Young is freed up a little so can make a good pass or can take a shot but he still usually has work to do against Capela’s man.

When the Warriors set a pick for Curry it is strong enough to impede the movement of his defender long enough to give Curry some space. If another defender is able to switch onto Curry with enough time, then this will leave that defender’s player open for a good shot.

Curry is then good enough to find the open man which helps the Warriors offense. Young is certainly good enough to do this, but is too reliant on his speed to get past the defender who has switched onto him. He is not forcing the defense to move around enough to create really good open looks for his teammates often enough.
