While the start to the 2021-2022 NBA season has not been too dazzling for the Atlanta Hawks (it is early, we will be alright!), one thing that has shined bright for the team is the new Nike “City Edition” jerseys.

Quite frankly, these jerseys are up there with my all-time favorite Hawks jerseys.

The design, the colors, the inclusion of jerseys from the past…it is an overall total masterpiece of a uniform.

The Atlanta Hawks City Editon jerseys draw from past eras for inspiration

Let’s take a look at what I meant by incorporating uniforms from the past into this newly debuted design to be worn by Trae Young and company. As this video shows, the City Edition jerseys have been inspired by vintage Hawks uniforms.

The small number on the left chest of the new jerseys is the same as the jersey numbers from when the Hawks came to Atlanta from St. Louis in 1968.

The “Atlanta” on the chest is the same font as it was on the blue and green jerseys that Pistol Pete Maravich wore in the early 1970s.

The number font on the back of the City jerseys is the same font as the numbers from the classic and beloved red and yellow 1980s jerseys that Dominique Wilkins, Spudd Webb, Doc Rivers, Tree Rollins, Mike Glenn, and many others donned.

And for my favorite feature of all, the Hawk on the upper abdomen has been adopted from the flashy jerseys that Dikembe Mutumbo and others rocked in the mid-to-late 1990s.

While showing respect to teams and jerseys of the past, this year’s City Edition jerseys give the Hawks an incredible retro, yet fresh, new uniform. Objectively, I think it is fair to say that these jerseys are among the coolest ones in the league.

In addition, the new court layout that accompanies these jerseys is pretty sweet. These 2021-2022 Atlanta Hawks Nike City Edition Jerseys are set to be available on November 15.
