Atlanta Hawks dud from undefeated homestand: Home or road has been a big deal

Things tend to even out over an 82-game NBA season. Players and teams go on hot and cold runs that should be held in as high of a regard as the game-to-game analysis we get daily. For the Hawks this has been no different. They began the season 4-3, lost six straight on the road, and have now won five in a row to get back to a .500 record.

Players have gone through slumps and worked their way around the league’s new way of dealing with players initiating contact.

For the team, however, we now see a big disparity in their performance on the road as opposed to at home in the friendly confines of State Farm Arena where they are now 7-1. They are 1-8 out on the road.

Atlanta averages 115.3 points, shoots 49.2 percent overall, and 38.5 percent from deep at home.

Compare that to 103.8 points on 43.2 percent shooting, and 34.9 percent three-point efficiency on the road and you see a snapshot of why they have fallen so short as visitors. They’ve turned the ball over just 13 times per game on the road as opposed to 11.9 on the road, but have gotten just 4.9 takeaways per game on tour and 8.6 steals when at home.

While their 8-1 home record is the second-best behind the Warriors, their 1-8 road record is the second-worst; ahead of only the young and rebuilding Houston Rockets. At 9-9 and with an equal amount of home and road games left on the docket, something has to give.

Hopefully, it is them turning things around on the road. If things continue as they have started, their goal of having homecourt advantage is going to be tougher to achieve if they make the postseason at all. They are currently 12th in the Eastern Conference.
