Atlanta Hawks center Clint Capela has made a living on defense, rebounding, and shooting the ball from around the restricted area. He is not really able to create for himself on offense and his shot is unreliable from anything more than five feet away from the rim.

This includes his free throw shooting which is bad this season, even by Capela’s lowly standards from the charity stripe. He is making only 46 percent of his attempts, leaving too many points at the line. This has led to some teams adopting a hack-a-Clint strategy in close games.

However, the biggest problem for Capela on offense is that he is constantly missing the easier layups around the rim. Sometimes he is able to get the offensive rebound and put back on his own misses but when he misses these chippies, it can really impact the momentum of the Hawks.

The Atlanta Hawks need to open the bank for Clint Capela

It is not as though Capela’s offense is completely broken. He is proficient in the pick and roll with Trae Young and when his point guard is able to lob the ball to him, Capla rarely disappoints. On top of that, he is good at getting the offensive rebound which he is able to convert into points quite regularly.

However, there was a moment in the Chicago Bulls game that stuck out as a way that Capela could improve his offense. He collected the ball near the free-throw line and took a couple of dribbles towards the basket. He then was able to put the shot up off the glass and he hit it.

This is where it needs to be at for Capela. As the great Dominique Wilkins says on almost every broadcast, the backboard is your friend. If Capela is able to take more shots where he uses the glass, he is far more likely to see them go in.

Putting a shot up off the backboard means you need to get more elevation on your shot. This then allows the ball a greater opportunity to drop even if the shot is not perfect due to having a better angle towards the basket. If Capela can add this to his game, he is going to give the Hawks a higher level of offense. The Hawks usually win when the big man gets buckets
