Trae Young’s All-Star game was like a recruitment drive for the Atlanta Hawks
Trae Young, the Atlanta Hawks only representative at the All-Star weekend, was a starter on Team Durant and also a finalist in the 3-point contest. Unfortunately for Young, Karl-Anthony Towns won the 3-point contest. This does not make KAT a better 3-point shooter than Young though.
While being acknowledged as one of the best 3-point shooters in the NBA is good, the nod from the fans to start an All-Star game is better. The narrative around Young is really changing which means that he is not being snubbed from representative teams this season. Could an All-NBA selection be on the cards?
However, I digress. Young was a deserved All-Star given that he is the only player in the NBA who is in the top-five for both scoring and assists this season. While the Hawks have been one of the most under-performing teams in the NBA this season, Young has been putting everything on the line to help this team win.
Tray Young played the All-Star game like he was recruiting for the Atlanta Hawks
Now, this is not a statement designed to offend anyone on the team. To be fair, it would be hard for any member of the current team to have displaced any of the All-Star roster. With that being said, what the Hawks did against the Phoenix Suns reminds of what they are capable of achieving as a team.
Young could have been trying to recruit some players given that he had eight assists in a hurry and would finish with a points/assists double-double for the game. His full statline was 13 points, 10 assists, two rebounds, and two steals which is a decent line for a second-time All-Star. No assist on the night was better than this one though.
Young showed what it could be like playing with him as the point guard with a second star. Yes he would score but as shown by his ridiculous passing numbers in the restricted area last year, he is more than willing to get others involved. He has never been out of the top four in the league for assists per game in his four years in the league.
While the All-Star game is not representative of normal basketball, knowing that the superstar on a team you could join will involve you in the offense, this might tip you to this team in free agency. This might be another way for the Hawks to make the step forward.
