The Atlanta Hawks have signed Jeff Teague to a regional scout role per RealGM. The Hawks are the team that selected the Indiana native with the 19th pick in the 2009 NBA draft. Teague then played seven seasons with the franchise, even making the All-Star team once.
He did come back and have another stint with the Hawks that lasted 25 games in the 2019-20 season. By then the Hawks’ game style had changed so much and Teague had slowed down a step that he struggled to fit in with the rest of the team and he signed with the Boston Celtics for the 2020-21 season.
He was traded by the Celtics to the Milwaukee Bucks last season and this is where Teague won his one and only championship, albeit with a relatively minor role. This meant that he went out on top at the age of 32.
The Atlanta Hawks welcomed Jeff Teague back as one of their own.
Despite the fact that John Collins is the longest-tenured player with five years at the franchise, there is still a culture within the organization which makes ex-players want to come back. Another example of this is Vince Carter who has stayed around as an analyst among other roles for the Hawks.
Teague’s role is not going to be anything glamorous, he is going to be going ahead of the team to scout the opposition that is coming up. Given how smart he was as a player, he will provide excellent intel for the coaching staff to help the team get some more wins.
This appears to be the first step for Teague to go into a coaching role. He was one of the most cerebral players the franchise has seen in the past ten years and will most probably make a good coach. This is especially so now that he has seen what it takes to win a championship.
