4 observations after Atlanta Hawks lose on the road in Charlotte
When the Atlanta Hawks live by the three…
It wasn’t just in the paint, either. Atlanta hit just 3-of-19 threes in the second half including 1-for-11 in the third quarter. Young went 0-for-6 from deep for the game but the bigger issue was his inability to get into the paint with any regularity – part of the scoring discrepancy.
Bogdan Bogdanovic’s shooting slump from outside also continued with the swingman logging 12 points. But he needed 16 shots to get there and went just 2-for-8 from downtown.
To make matters worse, after shooting just 7-of-27 threes through three quarters, including a 4-fo-7 first frame, Charlotte hit 4-of-8 threes in the fourth, though, one of those was a superfluous bucket by LaMelo Ball (22 points, 11 assists) at the end of the game. The three other makes saw the score go from 97-all to 111-100 Hornets in 2:32 seconds of game time.
The Hawks are now 10-21 in games where they shoot below 36.0 percent from deep.
This would have been a lopsided affair were it not for Kevin Huerter (16 points, seven rebounds, three assists, two steals) and De’Andre Hunter (21 points, three rebounds, two assists) combining to go 8-of-16 from beyond the arc.
There won’t be many games like this from Young who finished with nine points on 25.0% shooting to go with a whopping 15 assists and three steals. This was the first time that he’s failed to crack double-digit points this season. It is also just the sixth time he hasn’t hit at least one three.
Likewise, Bogdanovic was just on a serious scoring run so his efficiency should soon return. But the Hawks struggles to close have coincided with his slump.
