Why the Los Angeles Lakers say yes to the Atlanta Hawks trade.

The Lakers were installed as pre-season favorites when they traded their future away to the Washington Wizards for Russell Westbrook. They also then signed a large number of players at the end of their careers, all of whom were looking for a championship.

Well, this did not go well for the Lakers as they managed to finish in the eleventh seed and missed the play-in tournament. They were a game out of 10th meaning that the San Antonio Spurs advanced. The problem is that Westbrook failed to mesh and Davis was also below his normal level.

The centerpiece of this new trade is undoubtedly Collins. He has flashed star potential with the Hawks but has never been able to take that next step. LeBron James is the biggest star this league has seen for a number of years and could help Collins become more than he has been for the past five seasons.

The Lakers are also able to start refilling their depth by adding Wagner and Hampton which could help them next season. It would certainly be preferable for the Lakers to trade Westbrook, there are not many teams who would take a risk on a $47 million contract on a player who is starting to lose his athleticism.
