Should the Atlanta Hawks pass or pursue Delon Wright?
The Atlanta Hawks made a really good trade prior to the season starting. They sent Kris Dunn and Bruno Fernando to the Boston Celtics, receiving Tristan Thompson in return. They then flipped Thompson to the Sacramento Kings, receiving Delon Wright in return.
While it took a while for this move to bear fruit, Wright won playing time early in the season thanks to his defense, which is one of the reasons that head coach Nate McMillan wanted him at the franchise.
However, it was not until the Cam Reddish trade that Wright really came into his own. The reason for this is that he was given a clear, concise role by McMillan, something that the franchise was unable to do with Reddish being on the second unit. The difference that he was able to make in the second half of the season was incredible.
So should the Atlanta Hawks pass or pursue Delon Wright?
To put it simply, the Hawks should do everything that they can to pursue Wright. He is the type of player who is willing to sacrifice his own game for the good of the team. He is not going to beat many teams with his offense, but he is going to cause them headaches with his defense.
The way the Hawks’ reserve point guard played at the end of the season simply demanded more playing time. The way he plays the game is that he focuses so much on his role with the team that he does not really take in what the other players are doing short of making sure that he is doing the right thing by them. He did not know that Young had exploded for more than 30 points in a half during a play-in game.
Wright is going to garner a lot of interest from around the league this offseason. However, he has expressed his desire to return, knowing that the Hawks have a difficult salary cap situation. If the Hawks can somehow sign him, they need to.
