The Atlanta Hawks are going to have a summer surrounded by speculation. With the season just gone seen as a failure thanks to the lower finish than last season and the first-round exit against Miami Heat, there is a strong possiblity that the Hawks will turn over at least a part of their roster.

The good news for the Hawks faithful is that the Hawks ownership are not afraid of going into the luxury tax. This means that they might be able to bring in a second star and then round the roster out with good complimentary pieces.

To this end the Hawks need to look a little bit outside the box. They do not have much room on their salary cap sheet, which causes pressure for the front office to make changes. Hopeully they can make a trade or two to help ease this pressure which will allow them to sign a player such as Amir Coffey.

Why the Atlanta Hawks should consider Amir Coffey

While Coffey does not fit the star bill, he is an extremely solid roleplayer. He has the ability to defend up to four positions on the court, his height of 6’7″ means that he struggles against some of the bigger centers in the league.

On top of that, Coffey showed tremendous promise with the LA Clippers, firstly as a next man up with injury. He then showed that he could play with their superstar Paul George, helping make the Clippers very hard to beat.

Coffey is going to generate some interest around the league as he is developing into a solid 3-and-D player. While the Hawks have De’Andre Hunter in this role, Coffey could provide a good bench option orr even start if Hunter is traded. Given that he was one of the best players in the postseason, the Hawks would want to get a franchise player back for him.

Coffey would be a nice addition to the Hawks ranks but they should not break the bank to get him. They should pursue him but only at the right price, and only if the right roster spot opens up.
