Why do the Utah Jazz make this trade with the Atlanta Hawks?.

The Jazz is a team who is playing next season with an eye on the future. As soon as they sent Gobert to the Minnesota Timberwolves for a haul, they started the move towards the end of this particular era for the team.

Mitchell is signed for another four seasons and if the Jazz truly believes they cannot win it all with him in the fold then this contract becomes a millstone. They will therefore be looking towards the future. That future looks bright in the NBA draft with the Jazz having 12 first-round draft picks over the next six NBA drafts. This includes three in the next draft.

They have their own pick and also the best pick out from any of the Houston Rockets, Brooklyn Nets, or Philadelphia 76ers. They also have the Timberwolves’ first-round selection. This gives them a tremendous shot at selecting Victor Wembanyama who is touted to become one of the best players of all time.

So, why then would they take Westbrook on board, as per Shams of the Athletic, who is one of the hardest working players of all time and could scupper their plans? Well, for one, he is able to set the tone for the younger players of the franchise and he also gets them out of the Mitchell deal.

The Jazz will want another young player or draft pick for Mitchell, and Griffin is a player who can hit the 3-ball at a high clip. With the Jazz putting together a young core, he is potentially a very good floor spacing piece moving forward.
