The Atlanta Hawks have a rich history with international players including the Hall of Fame player Dikembe Mutombo and more recently the incredible talents of Al Horford. They are currently utilizing the talents of Bogdan Bogdanovic and Clint Capela as their international contingent.
Last season they also had the talents of the best shooting big man in the game Danilo Gallinari as well. When a fifth of your roster is made up of European players, you have a very diverse squad of players who bring different skillsets and attitudes to the squad.
This was true when Dennis Schroder was part of the team. He was a member of the Hawks franchise for five seasons. This includes the Hawks’ most successful season where they won 60 games but were bundled out in the Eastern Conference Finals without winning a game.
Ex-Atlanta Hawks guard Dennis Schroder is looking to lead Germany deep into EuroBasket.
Despite having Dirk Nowitzki for most of this century, the best that they have managed to finish was fourth, way back in 2001 when it was hosted in Turkey. They have directly qualified for four tournaments and despite the fact that they qualified directly as a host of this tournament, still had to go through the qualifiers.
Schroder has been amazing for the German national team during these qualifiers, including torching the Polish national team for 38 points as well as collecting seven rebounds. The German guard is showing the NBA that he still has it as he is not signed on to any team as yet for next season despite being one of the best free agents remaining.
If he can lead the German team deep into the EuroBasket tournament, then Schroeder deserves at least a training camp invite from one of the 30 NBA teams who will be watching the tournament with great interest.
It is unlikely that the Hawks will want to reunite with Schroder given that they already have a really solid guard rotation. However, Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot survived all the roster cutdowns to make the squad ad stayed with the Hawks all last season, so stranger things have happened.
