The Atlanta Hawks had a good draft considering their picks’ position. They got their man in the first round that they were after in AJ Griffin and then in the second round they traded back to get another wing in Tyrese Martin.

While it is unlikely that Martin will have a huge role with the Hawks next season, he will certainly spend time developing in the G League. The Hawks will hope that he will grow into a solid rotation piece but it is a lucky dip to see what talent you can get when you select deep in the second round.

Still, there have been some really good players who have been selected in the second round. One of the best players that comes to mind is Malcolm Brogdon who won the rookie of the year back in the 2016-17 season. While Martin is not expected to scale those heights, it would be good if he could emulate the play of his pro comparison.

So who is the pro comparison for Atlanta Hawks rookie Tyrese Martin?

Per nbadraft.net, the current player most like Martin is Amir Coffey of the LA Clippers. Coffey went undrafted before signing on with the Clippers as a two-way player in the 2019-20 season. He then signed a second two-way deal before converting it to a long-term NBA deal.

He has endeared himself to the Clippers coaching staff by being the swiss-army knife of their outfit. They were without two wing stars for most of the season. Kawhi Leonard missed the entire season while Paul George missed a large chunk of the season.

This meant that Coffey started 30 games for a team that finished eighth in the Western Conference despite missing their two best players. Coffey showed that he could step up and hit the 3-ball, defend multiple positions, and fill up the stat sheet. If Martin can come close to what the three-year veteran has been able to produce then the Hawks will have done well.
