Threat No. 4: The Miami Heat

The Miami Heat are always looking to take a big swing. Whether it’s stripping the team to the studs to sign LeBron James and Chris Bosh, or leaping into a trade for Jimmy Butler to open a new window of contention, the Heat have seen a lot of success by being bold in reshaping their roster.

That’s why they have to be mentioned in any discussion about trading for a star player. Would the Heat make a play for Trae Young? Almost certainly, especially since it’s in the backcourt that this team needs an infusion after an aging Kyle Lowry fluttered through the season and Tyler Herro proved he is neither a point guard nor a good defender.

Trae Young is only one of those, but he’s certainly a good one. The Heat’s two best players are not floor-spacers, so finding a co-star who can open up the court and fit passes into tight windows when the paint is clogged is important. Young’s flaws are an issue on any contending team, but the Heat are set up to need his strengths and to cover up his weaknesses.

Would the Hawks like Tyler Herro as the foundation for a trade package? How do they feel about Kyle Lowry or Duncan Robinson as salary ballast? The Heat are neither flush with picks nor trade assets, but they could put together a package for Young and use their incredible player development pipeline to restock the bench.
