Free agent target No. 2: Alec Burks, Guard

The 2022-23 Detroit Pistons were an abysmal team on both ends of the court, but don’t blame Alex Burks for that. The veteran combo guard has had one of the best seasons of his career as he sought to prop up the Pistons’ offense, shooting with career-best efficiency despite the lack of offensive talent around him.

Burks has bounced around the league over the past few seasons, playing for six teams in five years, but before that he started his career with Quin Snyder and the Utah Jazz. Burks played 7.5 seasons for the Jazz, serving as their bench gunner before they acquired Jordan Clarkson.

The former Colorado Buffaloes star never carved out a starting role in the league, but he has refined his game as a bench scorer. In the 2021 playoffs he was the only player on the New York Knicks who could score against the Atlanta Hawks. Perhaps that memory, paired with Snyder’s connections to Burks, could fuel a connection this summer.

Burks could be the answer for a scoring guard behind Trae Young and Dejounte Murray, but he perhaps makes even more sense if the Hawks trade Young, start Bogdanovic and need someone to fill in behind them. Either way, there is a path to Burks landing in Atlanta and continuing his crafty scoring ways.
