The Atlanta Hawks are gearing up for an eventful offseason, as they aim to bolster their roster with free agents and make a strong push in the NBA. With the free agency period approaching, the Hawks have their sights set on acquiring talented players who can contribute immediately. In this article, we will explore the potential free agency pickups for the Atlanta Hawks and dive into the history of the team’s successful signings in the past.

The Importance of Free Agency for the Atlanta Hawks

Free agency serves as a crucial opportunity for teams like the Atlanta Hawks to revamp their roster and add valuable talent to their lineup. The Hawks have recognized the need for improvements after their recent playoff shortcomings. By targeting impactful free agents, the team hopes to address its weaknesses and build a formidable squad that can contend in the highly competitive NBA landscape.

The Hawks desperately need improvements at the forward/center positions, as I feel like they have really good guards.

This post will be all about the best possible forwards and centers they could acquire. Stick around till the end for some Sweet Lou nostalgia, as one potential free agent signing could change everything when the season begins.

The Best Free Agents the Atlanta Hawks Could Acquire

1. Andre Drummond (Center)

Andre Drummond, a dominant force on the glass, could be a valuable addition to the Hawks’ frontcourt. He was once known as a dunking/rebounding machine, as he spent a lot of time in Detroit where he solidified himself as a top 5 center in the NBA at one point in time. Despite not being the player he once was, Drummond still possesses the ability to secure rebounds and finish plays around the rim. His presence as a reserve player could provide a significant boost to the team’s depth.

2. Paul Reed (Center/Forward)

Paul Reed might just be my favorite player on this list. He grinded in the G League, winning an MVP award. Watching his highlights I always wondered how he wasn’t in the NBA. He is so versatile and mobile for his size and position. As a bench option, Paul Reed offers similar qualities to Onyeka Okongwu, with his solid rebounding, defensive skills, and attacking ability. Adding Reed to the roster would provide the Hawks with another reliable option in the frontcourt rotation.

3. Mason Plumlee (Center)

Mason Plumlee is famous for his insane highlight reel, he’s one of the guys that you would never expect to be so crafty. I would go on to say his highlight reel makes him look like Magic Johnson.
Plumlee’s skill set and versatility make him an intriguing prospect for the Hawks. With his impressive bag of tricks, Plumlee could excel as a pick-and-roll partner for Trae Young. Additionally, his passing abilities and reasonable price tag make him an attractive option for the team.

4. Thomas Bryant (Center)

In the search for a cost-effective replacement for Clint Capela, Thomas Bryant emerges as a viable candidate. Bryant showcased his skills during Anthony Davis’ absences with the Lakers, demonstrating his ability to protect the rim, rebound, and contribute offensively. It was also odd to see Bryant on a Lakers jersey and it not being Kobe. His affordability could be a key factor in the Hawks’ decision-making process.

5. Christian Wood (Forward)

This guy is a certified bucket. Christian Wood‘s career has been marked by ups and downs, but his shooting prowess and rebounding ability cannot be ignored. While there may be some risk associated with Wood, his potential impact on both ends of the court could make him a worthwhile addition to the Hawks’ roster.

6. Nikola Vucevic (Center)

Nikolas are taking over the NBA, from Jokic and Jovic to now, Vucevic.
Acquiring Nikola Vucevic would require the Hawks to part ways with Capela’s contract. However, Vucevic’s floor-spacing abilities and rebounding prowess make him an attractive option. His three-point shooting percentage of 35% adds another dimension to his game, providing the Hawks with an offensive weapon from the center position. This would be a major plus, as they lack the three point shooting with Capela.

7. Jakob Poeltl (Center)

If the Hawks decide to move on from Capela, Jakob Poeltl could offer a lower-cost alternative. Poeltl’s rebounding and defensive skills make him a valuable asset, even though he may not contribute much in terms of scoring. His presence would significantly bolster the team’s defense.

8. P.J. Washington (Forward, Restricted)

Nowadays, Washington is mostly known for being catfished by an Instagram clout demon. People forget that he is a killer still, and even though he is a restricted free agent, I believe that the Hawks could pursue, and eventually sign him to a contract this offseason.

While prying P.J. Washington away from the Charlotte Hornets may prove to be challenging, the versatile defender’s shooting and playmaking abilities make him an intriguing prospect for the Hawks. His potential fit within the team’s system could make him a valuable replacement should John Collins or Capela’s contracts be moved.

9. Rui Hachimura (Forward, Restricted)

This one is a stretch honestly, but Hachimura finally proved what he can do on the court.
Although it is unlikely that the Los Angeles Lakers would let Rui Hachimura go, the young forward’s impact as a defender and spot-up shooter is noteworthy. If the Hawks have the necessary cap space, Hachimura could serve as an interesting replacement for John Collins, bringing a different skill set to the team.

10. Naz Reid (Center)

It’s insane to me how this guy makes the NBA top 10 on a weekly basis. He has game.
Naz Reid‘s undersized stature may limit his defensive capabilities, but his shooting and floor-spacing abilities could make him a valuable asset for the Hawks. Reid’s agility and quickness make him a challenging player to guard, and his potential partnership with Trae Young in pick-and-roll situations could be a game-changer for the team.

11. Dario Saric (Center/Forward)

Dario Saric‘s versatility and all-around skills make him an appealing option as a bench player for the Hawks. His ability to guard multiple positions, coupled with his passing and three-point shooting, would provide valuable depth to the team’s rotation.

12. Drew Eubanks (Center/Forward)

Drew Eubanks, with his ability to protect the rim, rebound, and shoot from beyond the arc, could be a valuable addition to the Hawks’ roster. Whether as a bench player or alongside Onyeka Okongwu, Eubanks’ skill set would provide the team with additional floor spacing and interior presence.

13. Brook Lopez (Center)

Brook Lopez offers a comprehensive skill set that perfectly aligns with the Hawks’ needs at the center position. Despite his age, Lopez remains a high-quality rim defender and a reliable three-point shooter. His presence would greatly enhance the team’s defensive capabilities while providing a valuable offensive weapon. There is a good chance that he will leave the Bucks.

Notable Free Agents Previously Signed by the Atlanta Hawks

The Atlanta Hawks have a history of successful free-agent signings that have significantly impacted the team. While the focus is on potential acquisitions for the upcoming offseason, it is worth acknowledging the notable players who have previously joined the Hawks.

One such player is Lou Williams, whose signing in 2012 brought a valuable scoring punch off the bench. Williams has proven himself as an above-average NBA player, often serving as a sixth man and providing consistent scoring and playmaking abilities. Although injuries limited his playing time last season, Williams has the potential to contribute significantly when fully healthy.

The Atlanta Hawks are poised to make moves during the upcoming free agency period in their quest to strengthen their roster and compete at a higher level. With a list of potential targets in mind, the team will carefully evaluate each player’s fit and impact.

By making strategic signings, the Hawks hope to build a formidable squad that can make a deep run in the playoffs and establish themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the NBA.
