The Atlanta Hawks agreed on a contract with Nickeil Alexander-Walker in a surprise move that gives them the perfect 3-and-D reserve wing capable of thriving next to Trae Young. NAW helped the Timberwolves reach the conference finals in back-to-back years and was not shy about defending reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in the playoffs. Atlanta is always looking for shooting and defense around their star, and this is the perfect fit.
With Dyson Daniels and Zaccharie Risarcher locked in, the Hawks wanted a versatile option that was comfortable coming off the bench and playing multiple roles. Alexander-Walker is just entering his prime and is a significant defensive upgrade over Caris LeVert.
Young is a four-time All-Star and one of the best offensive creators in the NBA. He has significant defensive limitations that the franchise has to account for. Credit to new GM Onsi Saleh and his front office. They are filling those holes and giving the Hawks a serious shot at contention.

The Hawks are dominating the offseason. They traded for Kristaps Porzingis at a bargain rate, made the deal of the draft in acquiring a likely high lottery pick in 2026 to move down, and selected a potential steal in Asa Newell. Everything has been aces for Atlanta this offseason, including the Alexander-Walker deal.
NAW shot 38.4 percent from three in his two-and-a-half seasons with the Wolves. He has the versatility to guard on or off the ball and could play a larger role in Atlanta. Alexander-Walker is just entering his prime and keeps getting better. This was another fantastic bit of business for the Hawks.
Ice Trae will have the ball in his hands. NAW shot 42.5 percent from 3-point range off the catch last season and made 39.2 percent on open looks with the defender at least four feet away. Young will have no issues finding him or creating wide-open shots. Alexander-Walker may even take another step in Atlanta.
On the other end of the floor, NAW has no issues taking on the opposition’s primary creator. He is a stout on-ball defender with quickness and athleticism. He was chosen over Jaden McDaniels to guard SGA in the conference finals. The Hawks can use Dyson Daniels in a more roaming role as Alexander-Walker takes the primary creator.
The Atlanta Hawks are putting on a masterclass in team building. They are quickly becoming a serious threat in the wide-open Eastern Conference. Nickeil Alexander-Walker is the perfect fit next to Trae Young and raises the franchise’s ceiling. Fans should be excited. The Hawks are back!
