The Atlanta Hawks have two open roster spots, and Amir Coffey could immediately jump into the team’s rotation if they sign him. The 6’7 wing shot over 40 percent from 3-point range last season and can guard multiple positions. Coffey is an unrestricted free agent and would be the perfect find for a team expecting to leap up the standings.

The Hawks had a monster offseason. They added Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Kristaps Porzingis, and Luke Kennard to a talented group. Jalen Johnson is ready for his All-Star breakout, and Trae Young remains one of the league’s best creators. The Hawks got talent, but they need depth to compete with the best teams in the world.

Atlanta needs one more trusted option with versatility to play in multiple lineups. They don’t want to be relying on Asa Newell or Mouhamed Gueye to play a nightly rotation role. Finding someone who can space the floor and defend multiple positions is ideal. Quinn Snyder could instantly throw Coffey into the rotation and never miss a beat.

Amir Coffey would immediately jump into the Hawks' rotation

Coffey averaged 9.7 points, 2.2 rebounds, 1.1 assists, and 0.6 steals in 24.3 minutes per game last season. The 28-year-old shot 47.1 percent from the field and 89.1 percent on his free throws. He is comfortable spacing the floor and defending whoever the coaching staff desires.

The Hawks have questions in the rotation. Kristaps Porzingis struggles to stay healthy, and Atlanta only has one other center. They will sign a third big man, but that player will be used in a limited role. When KP misses time, the Hawks must embrace small ball. That means spacing the floor and getting out in transition.

Atlanta would be dangerous with a Young, Johnson, Risacher, Alexander-Walker, and Coffey attack. It would give them plenty of shooting and the versatility to switch everything. As a change of pace, opposing teams would struggle to adjust.

Coffey would compete with rookie Asa Newell, Vit Krejci, Nikola Djurisic, and Gueye for rotation minutes as the tenth man. His shooting and versatility would give him a leg up, especially with Atlanta committed to winning right now.

The Hawks’ new front office should already be working the phone. Amir Coffey could play a key role on a team searching for depth. Modern NBA teams can never have too many wings, especially ones capable of shooting over 40 percent from 3-point range.

The Atlanta Hawks need one more piece to win the offseason. They significantly improve their roster, and the Eastern Conference is wide open. Fans could see them quickly become a serious threat, especially if they add another player capable of jumping directly into their rotation.
