After a six-game road trip that included 2 countries and five cities in 12 nights ended, the Atlanta Hawks were set to host a two-game stand, starting with the Houston Rockets. But the Hawks must now wait for their homecoming.
“Our game against the Houston Rockets, originally scheduled today for 3:00pm [ET], has been postponed due to inclement weather, the organization announced in a post on X on January 11.
“We will provide a new date once we receive it from the NBA. Stay tuned for more information.”
The weather has certainly impacted more important facets of life than a basketball game.
“The snow may be over in north Georgia, but dropping temperatures overnight will lead to dangerous conditions on metro Atlanta's roads and potential power outages,” Fox 5 Atlanta's digital team reported on January 10.
“The Georgia Department of Transportation and law enforcement agencies across metro Atlanta have asked Georgians to remain off the roads as much as possible. Driving will be dangerous, with slick roads and potential black ice. Residents are advised to stay inside until at least midday on Saturday.”
According to WSB-TV 2, while Georgia Power was able to restore service to 230,000 customers, some 60,000 remained without as of 11:00 a.m.
WSB-TV 2’s report also noted that Atlanta was among the three “hardest hit areas” along with Alpharetta and Jonesboro. As of 12:00 p.m., 339 flights were canceled with another 480 delayed at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
The Hawks plan to do right by their affected fans.
“All available ticket prices and parking will remain valid for the new date including transferred tickets,” The Hawks’ post announced.
Hawks join litany of postponements in sports world
The Hawks game getting canceled is hardly a rarity in the sports world this week, though most of the others have been for the polar opposite reason.
The Los Angeles Lakers have had two games – against the Charlotte Hornets on January 9 and tonight against the San Antonio Spurs – have been postponed due to the ongoing Pasadena Palisades wildfires.
Those fires have also impacted the LA Kings of the NHL, who postponed their contest against the Calgary Flames before the Lakers announced their changes.
The Los Angeles Rams Wild Card game against the Minnesota Vikings was moved to Arizona.
Thoughts and prayers go out to those affected by the wildfires, and that those impacted by the weather in Georgia remain safe.
