The Southeast Division isn't one that's often in the headlines for this long.
Shortly after the Miami Heat finally completed the long-anticipated trade for two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Charlotte Hornets made a pair of moves that simply came out of left field. LaMelo Ball is heading to the Minnesota Timberwolves, and Miles Bridges is heading to the Phoenix Suns.
All of these deals are quite different from one another, but they all benefit the Atlanta Hawks in unique ways. Some more than others, but still, things are looking pretty good as last year's division champions head into a pivotal improvement-focused offseason.
Atlanta is now set to be well ahead of Charlotte's timeline
With Ball and Bridges leading the way, the Hornets were able to make more noise than they had for a long time last season. While still locked into a Play-In Tournament spot, and eventually eliminated before reaching the playoffs, there was no shortage of excitement around how exactly they could improve even more for their next time around.
They've still got a bright young core, led by the inevitable Kon Knueppel, along with steady veterans in Naz Reid and Grayson Allen, but now it's clear they'll likely take a bit of a step back next season while focusing more on the long-term future.
It's a gamble, no doubt, and the Hawks should worry about them becoming a contender eventually, but they've now got some more time to find their niche before the division becomes much more competitive. Ball and Bridges were two "Hawks-killers", and now that they're both out of the conference, things should get much easier in the immediate.
The Heat, on the other hand, are expected to leap the Hawks next season after their addition of one of the best players in the entire league, but maybe that won't go exactly how most are anticipating it to. The NBA is an unpredictable league.
The Hawks have done a solid job defending Giannis since 2021
One of Antetokounmpo's least-favorite teams to face in the regular season is, in fact, the Atlanta Hawks. They were able to frustrate him, even when Trae Young was on the roster, and now that he's gone - and locked into a massive contract with the Washington Wizards - Atlanta has been able to exploit the two-time MVP's weaknesses even more.
They've started throwing unique defensive assignments his way, including Dyson Daniels - a guard - making him uncomfortable before ever reaching the painted area.
There's no reason to believe they can't continue building on their impressive team-oriented defensive dominance on Antetokounmpo, now that he's in their division.
The 2026-27 season is going to be an electric one, now more than ever, as the Southeast Division is showing no signs of slowing down in the market.
