Hawks' draft selection could be nail in the coffin for Zaccharie Risacher

A top-ten pick will receive nightly minutes.

The way Zaccharie Risacher was managed last season was controversial. There wasn't any room for error, and he probably deserved more of a leash, but he didn't do himself many favors when he saw extended playing time. It's led many to believe he's on his way out.

It's a reasonable sentiment. Atlanta has a long way to go as a group after being eliminated in embarrassing fashion by the New York Knicks, but they now at least understand where exactly they need to improve long-term.

It'll impact the way they operate this offseason, and it all starts with the upcoming draft. Whoever they select with the eighth pick will likely get much more priority than Risacher, leading to his inevitable exit from the franchise.

There's no reason to keep him around if they want to play their rookie

It wouldn't be fair to Risacher. Head Coach Quin Snyder made it clear he doesn't have much room to make mistakes, and a young player like him needs that. Sending him to a more ideal situation for his services could be a respectable way forward.

In just two years with the Hawks, Risacher's seen it all. He was in the starting lineup for a year and a half before being benched in favor of CJ McCollum, before being removed from the nightly rotation altogether.

Assuming they'll select a high-upside contributor with their top ten pick this year, there's no realistic scenario where Risacher re-enters the rotation next season. He's making first-overall pick money. That's bad business.

They should, and likely will, explore draft night trade scenarios to send him elsewhere. It may be difficult to find a suitor for his expensive contract, but there will be a team willing to take a calculated gamble on the young forward's trajectory.

This year's class presents a major opportunity for the Hawks to move on

Fans have reasonable suspicion that their first-round selection will have a similar struggle getting nightly minutes with Coach Snyder at the helm, but they have a chance to draft a true foundational piece.

There's a legitimate chance that the eighth-best prospect in this year's draft will have a higher ceiling than the best from 2024. That's how stacked this group is, and why General Manager Onsi Saleh valued the Pelicans' unprotected selection so much.

Whether it's Aday Mara, Mikel Brown Jr., Kingston Flemings or Keaton Wagler, it's clear the direction they're heading likely doesn't include Zaccharie Risacher. If that's the case, they should do right by him and let him flourish elsewhere.
