Hawks outbid championship hopefuls for critical trade acquisition

Atlanta Hawks general manager Landry Fields made two significant trades at the 2025 deadline, both involving franchise stalwarts. One sent De’Andre Hunter to the Cleveland Cavaliers for a package featuring Caris LeVert Georges Niang, and a pair of future first-round pick swaps.

Their other major deal sent Bogdan Bogdanovic to the Los Angeles Clippers for Bones Hyland and Terance Mann. The Hawks waived Hyland, but Mann has become a valued contributor.

It is fortunate for the Hawks, since he was almost a Denver Nugget as the look to win another title.

“Sources say that the Nuggets had interest in a number of available players in that [$5.1 million to $8.8 million] price range — Terance Mann standing out among them before Mann landed with Atlanta,” Jake Fischer wrote for The Stein Line on April 12. “Denver felt the cost was too high.”

Mann, 28, is averaging 9.5 points per game, which would be his most since 2021-22 across a full season, on 61.8% eFG since the trade.

He is on an expiring two-year, $22 million pact and starts a three-year, $47 million one looming.

Playoffs are Terance Mann’s time to shine

Mann’s most significant contribution to the Hawks could be his winning mentality and postseason experience.

“When we made these moves, and we got guys, obviously, from the Cavs – who were the No. 1 team at the time. And then you bring in T-Mann who’s – I don’t even think he’s ever not been in the playoffs.” Trae Young said during the “From The Point” podcast episode that aired on February 19. “You got winners around you, so it’s like you got to win. You got to be in the playoffs, so that’s our main focus.”

The Hawks surrendered Bogdanovic, a trusted contributor from their Eastern Conference Finals run in 2020-21, but one who was largely ineffective for and unavailable to them due to injuries this season, for Mann.

Bogdanovic is also under contract for two more seasons on a four-year, $68 million contract, albeit with a team option in 2026-27.

The fiery veteran swingman has found his stride with the playoff-bound Clippers.

That does not negate Mann’s contributions to the Hawks, especially since he has settled in, boasting a 10.4/3.2/2.0 line over the last 24 games. Mann shot 37.5% from beyond the arc during that same span.

The Hawks are 13-11 in those games, shaking off  2-3 start following Mann’s acquisition from the Clippers.

A former second-round pick in 2019 (No. 48 overall), Mann’s time to shine is yet to come.

Mann’s 43 games of playoff experience are second on the Hawks, only checking in behind Niang (56). He has averaged a 9.9/4.2/2.0 line while connecting on 46.3% of his triples over his last two postseason trips.

The Hawks must get to the playoffs first, and their final hurdle toward that goal is to beat the Orlando Magic on the road in the Play-In Tournament.

Perhaps the Hawks can tap into Playoff Mann one game early.
