Jalen Duren and his camp must make a decision today. Finally.

After months of back and forth, the Detroit Pistons, along with 29 other teams, will see one of the summer's biggest questions receive an answer. By 11:59 p.m. ET, he must either agree to a long-term extension with the franchise, or accept the one-year qualifying offer.

For teams that have been reportedly monitoring the situation, in hopes of Duren becoming available, this decision holds massive weight. The Atlanta Hawks have been named as a potential suitor, and while their interest in him this summer is likely overstated, it wouldn't be surprising to see them ramp it up a year from now.

They could only do that if he accepts the qualifying offer, though.

Duren as an unrestricted free agent next summer is much more intriguing

If he takes the qualifying offer, he'll remain with the Pistons for the 2026-27 season, but hit unrestricted free agency immediately after. At that point, any team with the necessary cap space could throw him an offer, and Detroit would be unable to match.

Atlanta, if everything goes according to plan, is set to have max-level cap room in the 2027 offseason. They'll be in play for nearly all of the top available targets.

Choosing this path instead of signing long-term with the Pistons is a major risk for Duren, considering how poorly he played in their recent postseason appearance.

After an All-NBA season, forcing his name into the same discussions as the top centers in the world, many of his weaknesses were exposed. His offensive limitations are real.

If he accepts the one-year risk, and doesn't match the production he displayed over the course of the 2025-26 regular season, he could be attainable for significantly less annual value in unrestricted free agency.

Taking Detroit's already-massive offer would likely age as the best decision, and fans will soon find out if he indeed goes that route.

If he does, Atlanta can firmly back off from any interest they may have

A long-term deal would make Detroit his home for the next several seasons.

They likely would remain near the top of the Eastern Conference standings, giving them little reason to engage in trade discussions for their paint enforcer.

Plus, if he's making $40 million a year, his contract becomes less and less tradable.

Atlanta isn't paying anybody over $30 million this season, and even though they'll have significant cap space next summer, they shouldn't throw it all away in a trade for Duren.
