Superstars aren't defined by their cold stretches.

Against all odds, the Atlanta Hawks were able to steal a win in New York, tying their first-round series up at one a piece. A collaborative offensive effort combined with elite defense from start to finish willed the away team to victory, and Jalen Johnson was in the driver's seat.

It didn't look like he was for awhile. He had about as rough of a start as one could imagine. But, he stayed true to what he knows and didn't let the crowd into his head. It's not about how a player starts, it's about how they finish. For Johnson, he knew he needed to bounce back if his team was going to be able to steal a win, and he did just that. The ultimate indicator of a young star's trajectory.

Jalen Johnson just did something not many around the league can do

It's easy to fold during a bad game, especially come playoff-time, and especially in Madison Square Garden. This arena either brings out the best or worst in a player. It's up to them to respond to the constant heckling and make them silent.

Even while not being the face of the unexpected run, players can still make an undeniable impact in setting the tone. Trae Young silenced Knicks fans in 2021, and CJ McCollum stunned them in 2026 with his fourth quarter dominance, but it's what Jalen Johnson was able to do in the second half of Game Two that really flipped the script on the series. Suddenly, the Hawks have momentum.

He started the night by shying away from what he does best. Playing much less of an aggressive game, New York was able to take advantage of his uninspired approach and get out to an early lead. Johnson had just four points with zero made field goals heading into halftime. All of his points came at the line.

Again, as Hawks fans see often, games are defined by how their best players respond to adversity. He entered the second half with much more confidence and made an effort to increase his on-ball volume. Johnson had 13 points in the final two quarters alone, helping lead his team to a remarkable comeback victory. He finished the night with 17 points, eight rebounds and three assists. Underwhelming by his standards, but still a commendable performance, all things considered.

Atlanta's ceiling now becomes much higher with Johnson playing like this

If this was a true turning point for their young star's ability to navigate postseason basketball, then they're going to be in great shape. With CJ McCollum channeling his inner-villain and Dyson Daniels locking up Jalen Brunson, all Jalen Johnson needs to do is continue being a silent killer.

This squad is instilling hope in a fanbase that's been needing it. Now, with one win out of the way, the next two matchups at State Farm Arena could determine who gets the upper hand. Johnson is ready to show out in front of his home crowd.
