One of the greatest slow-burn success stories in recent NBA history is that of Jalen Johnson - Atlanta's breakout star forward. He earned All-NBA honors after an incredible 2025-26 season, and is looking to replicate that impact in the next one.

Once a niche high-impact starter for a team with no real postseason aspirations, Johnson has blossomed into a force that those around the league can no longer ignore.

When a player is being mentioned alongside Victor Wembanyama - the 2026 Defensive Player of the Year and arguably the most skilled player in the league - they're clearly doing something right.

Hawks fans can sleep well at night knowing the new face of their franchise is beginning to earn the respect he deserves.

Johnson is one of the best players in the league under 25

Johnson, 24, is entering his sixth season in the NBA - his first as his team's top option.

Of course, he took over halfway through last season after Atlanta traded away Trae Young and Kristaps Porzingis, but this is the first time he's entering the year as the guy.

Atlanta has every reason to be confident in his progression, and those around the league are starting to take notice.

Liam McKeone of Sports Illustrated recently ranked the top ten NBA players under 25 years old, and Johnson's ranking was much higher than many could've anticipated.

He has him as the second-best under-25 player in the world - just one spot behind Wembanyama.

Wembanyama, 22, is coming off of his first NBA Finals appearance as San Antonio's top option. In just three seasons, he's already done enough to warrant being called the best player in the league. The fact that Johnson is just one spot behind him tells fans everything they need to know.

It's not just about who he's behind, though. Johnson was ranked ahead of some notable players.

Two top picks and an NBA champion - JJ reigns supreme

McKeone not only ranked Johnson one spot behind Wembanyama, but over some quality young players.

He's in front of Cooper Flagg, Chet Holmgren and Paolo Banchero.

Any of the three would have a compelling argument to be ahead of Johnson, but it's no secret as to why he was given the edge.

Atlanta's forward has a complete game. His offensive package is the most versatile of the group, and if he can tap back in to his once-excellent defensive bag, the Hawks could finally take that next step towards contention.
