Yes, Kristaps Porzingis is still really good, but he could never stay healthy and was on an expiring contract. It made sense for Atlanta to move off of him, and to get a young player of Kuminga's caliber in return? Go for it.
Even though it was just for the back-half of a season, it was a risk worth taking, and it allowed the Hawks to learn. Other teams around the league should take note.
Atlanta's activity is setting a new standard across the NBA
There are many things that can be said about Onsi Saleh's tenure as the Hawks' lead decision-maker, but not that they've showed complacency. If anything, they engage in too much movement.
Often times, teams are afraid to make difficult decisions, especially midseason, as they want their squads to continue building on their already-established chemistry. It makes sense, but if it never results in a rising trajectory, staying put is the most controversial thing they could do.
Saleh has proven he doesn't fall into the same trap most decision-makers often do.
The Hawks needed a reliable boost in their second unit. By this point in the season, Head Coach Quin Snyder had already moved Porzingis to the bench in favor of Onyeka Okongwu, and while the idea (and result) was mostly excellent, again, he simply couldn't stay healthy. Hence the reliability interest.
Kuminga provided that for the remainder of the year, and gave Atlanta a clear recipe for future success, even without him being part of it.
A bold in-season gamble paved the way for summer operation
Even if the Hawks didn't act upon the dire need of improvements in their second unit (they did), at least the Kuminga saga kept fans entertained.
Lasting the bulk of the offseason, it almost felt like no team was going to pick him up. Now heading to Minnesota, he gets an opportunity to showcase what he did during his short tenure in Atlanta, and more.
Kuminga gave Atlanta a clear plan, and it was all thanks to the bold move conducted by their front office. If other teams follow, not only will they likely benefit in both the immediate and long-term, but their fans will be kept on their toes as each year's deadline approaches, drawing major February intrigue.
