The Hawks have acquired Lu Dort and Ryan Nembhard in a three-team trade that sends Zaccharie Risacher to the Dallas Mavericks and three second-round picks to the Oklahoma City Thunder, per ESPN's Shams Charania.
Atlanta had a busy offseason even before these acquisitions, but now the Hawks have made it clear that they're prioritizing proof over potential for the upcoming season. This is made evident by their willingness to ship off Risacher, who is only two years removed from being selected by the Hawks with the #1 overall selection.
Moving off from a player with so much potential so early seems like a hasty decision to make, but with defensive depth being their Achilles heel last postseason, it makes sense for Atlanta to move off of Risacher with this new mentality, especially now, seeing that they were able to get a highly respected defender in Lu Dort in return for him.
Uncertainty in the east opens the door for Atlanta in 2027
With all of the shake-up happening right now in the Eastern Conference - highlighted by Jaylen Brown being traded to the Philadelphia 76ers and Giannis Antetokounmpo signing with the Miami Heat - there aren't many proven rosters that have shown their ability to compete with the New York Knicks come postseason, which gives Atlanta the perfect opportunity to finally emerge.
As one of the only teams to truly give the reigning NBA champions a scare during their historic playoff run, their defensive focus this offseason is no coincidence.
In this sense, moving off of Zaccharie Risacher while his value is still somewhat respectable was a smart move to make. While it's bittersweet to see such a young talent walk out of the building, a clear motive has been instilled into this team based off of their offseason moves, and that alone should have Hawks fans excited for 2027.
The Atlanta Hawks now have a proven championship-level defender in their pocket to go along with the already-proven defensive duo of Dyson Daniels and Nickeil Alexander-Walker, which now opens the door for a wide-range of defensive versatility.
Not to mention, Atlanta now has their focus set toward developing their two newest rookies in the building. While Kingston Flemings and Zuby Ejiofor already have the NBA-ready talent that got them drafted in the first place, intention toward their rookie-year development is still going to need to be kept.
As harsh as it sounds, Atlanta could no longer afford to prioritize Zaccharie Risacher's halted development, especially with the contention window that seems to be opening up for them in 2027.
The bottom line is that the Hawks are ready to make a bigger splash in the Eastern Conference this upcoming season, and their offseason moves have directly highlighted this mentality.
The preseason hype can only take a team so far, however, so the Hawks will need to be keen on starting the season on the right foot and truly build momentum off of their strong end to the 2026 season.
It'll be interesting to see where the Hawks fall in the Eastern Conference this upcoming season, but the mentality is already set for the Hawks to establish their new identity, all it takes now is for the team to rise to the occasion and truly prove that they belong in these conversations with their peers sitting atop of the preseason Eastern Conference rankings.
