Asa Newell wasn't a guarantee to play ahead of any game last season - his rookie campaign - but in the limited minutes he received, he delivered.
His inconsistent role never allowed him to get fully accustomed to NBA-level intensity, leaving the margin for error slim and ability work through any struggles minimal.
Entering his second NBA season, again, his spot in the nightly rotation is uncertain, although his familiarity with the system could give him and advantage over his peers. He could have priority over some newcomers.
Another thing that could give him an edge is his most underrated skill - offensive rebounding.
Newell's relentlessness on the glass is a major separator
Motor is something that can't be taught.
Even if Newell is struggling for the majority of a game, one thing that won't go away is his assertion in collecting rebounds.
Good players make their presence felt, even when their shot isn't falling.
In Atlanta's fourth preseason game, and third preseason victory, Newell struggled mightily with his shot. Beginning the game 0-7, his first made basket didn't come until the third quarter despite being among the starting group.
It didn't limit the action he saw, though. In fact, Newell's 27 minutes were the third-highest for the Hawks, and he played an invaluable role in them picking up yet another preseason win.
Before the night was over, he picked up ten rebounds, with five coming on the offensive glass.
He was relied upon late in the game, and despite missing a late three that would've given Atlanta the lead, he sprinted to the basket, collected his own rebound and finished a putback, giving the Hawks a one-point advantage with little time remaining.
When the opponent became tired, and inexperience was on full display, Newell used his high basketball IQ to help the Hawks come away with a victory. Winning players make winning plays.
This wasn't the first time Newell dominated the offensive glass this preseason
In Atlanta's first preseason battle with the Memphis Grizzlies, despite the close loss, Newell once again picked up five offensive rebounds. He had 12 rebounds total.
Teams with real aspirations can always use a player who's willing to put his body on the line for the greater good.
With a spot in the nightly rotation on the line, Newell can't afford to let up, and there's no indication that he ever will.
