With Okongwu's October 19 extension deadline approaching, it wouldn't necessarily be surprising if Atlanta allowed the date to pass without reaching an agreement. The Hawks have previously explored other starting-caliber centers, but their desire to maintain financial flexibility could be an even bigger factor in their decision.
Atlanta is expected to have meaningful financial flexibility next summer, potentially positioning the organization to pursue another established star. One name worth monitoring is Karl-Anthony Towns, whose long-term future with the New York Knicks remains uncertain.
According to ESPN's Brian Windhorst, Atlanta is among the teams that could realistically pursue Towns if he becomes available in free agency. While there's no indication the Hawks are actively pursuing him, the possibility highlights why preserving flexibility could be important.
Towns' situation highlights Hawks' bigger opportunity
Towns' contract situation with New York remains unresolved, creating uncertainty about his long-term future. If negotiations don't progress and he eventually becomes available, teams with financial flexibility could position themselves to pursue the All-Star center.
Windhorst identified Atlanta, Golden State and the Los Angeles Clippers as potential suitors if Towns enters free agency. That doesn't guarantee any of those teams will pursue him, but it reinforces how valuable financial flexibility can become when an established star reaches the market.
For the Hawks, Towns would represent the type of offensive upgrade that could significantly elevate their ceiling. His scoring versatility, rebounding and perimeter shooting could complement Jalen Johnson while giving Atlanta another dependable offensive weapon.
However, Towns isn't the only potential opportunity worth considering. President of Basketball Operations Onsi Saleh has consistently emphasized maintaining flexibility rather than making commitments that could limit Atlanta's ability to improve.
Extending Okongwu wouldn't automatically eliminate the possibility of pursuing another star. Nevertheless, another long-term financial commitment could reduce the organization's options when a significant opportunity eventually presents itself.
Okongwu's extension decision could reveal Atlanta's priorities
Okongwu remains an important contributor and has shown encouraging development, particularly with his improved perimeter shooting. His defensive mobility and offensive versatility continue to provide value within Quin Snyder's system.
However, there's a difference between valuing Okongwu and deciding he's unquestionably Atlanta's long-term answer at center. The Hawks' previous exploration of other options suggests the organization hasn't completely closed the door on upgrading the position.
If both sides fail to reach an agreement, that shouldn't automatically be interpreted as Atlanta losing confidence in Okongwu. He's already under contract beyond this season, meaning the Hawks could continue evaluating their options without facing an immediate departure.
More importantly, keeping future financial commitments manageable could allow Saleh to approach next summer with greater flexibility. Whether that eventually involves Towns or another available star remains to be seen.
The Hawks shouldn't feel pressured to make a long-term decision simply because a deadline is approaching. Sometimes maintaining flexibility is just as important as securing a player already on the roster.
Okongwu's deadline could pass without changing his immediate role in Atlanta. But it might reveal something much bigger about how the Hawks are preparing for their future.
