No rookie season is ever perfect. Kingston Flemings - after an impressive stretch of early-season performances - may soon be running into his first true roadblock.

Late in the fourth quarter of their recent loss to the New Orleans Pelicans, Flemings elbowed Bryce McGowens in the face, resulting in him receiving a quick ejection. The score was already out of hand, so losing their rookie point guard didn't make an immediate impact, but it certainly could if the league decides to discipline him further.

If he ends up getting suspended, for whatever amount of time, Atlanta could be forced to make a major adjustment to their rotation. His reliable ball-handling and shot-creation in the second unit has been invaluable through seven games. Losing it would hurt.

A small suspension is realistic, and the Hawks must plan accordingly

It wouldn't be anything drastic.

He's no repeat offender. This was a rookie mistake, and absolutely something he can learn from. Considering the weaknesses of this Hawks roster, however, fans must hope the league doesn't look to make any sort of example out of him.

Atlanta took a major risk when they got rid of both Devin Carter and Ryan Nembhard just before the start of the season, but they were backed up by their belief in their rookie. Flemings and CJ McCollum are the only two point guards on the team.

While McCollum's technically listed as a point guard, Flemings may be the only traditional one. That leaves much playmaking to be desired in the backcourt. While it's an incredible boost to have forwards who can make plays for others, when there isn't a reliable generator of offense at either guard spot, a team's outlook can suffer.

Already under .500 on the year, Atlanta's familiar roster can't afford to go through the same growing pains of a team that made significant offseason alterations. However, they soon may not have much of a choice.

If Flemings is suspended, Atlanta must rely on their veteran guards

There's no questioning the ability of CJ McCollum and Nickeil Alexander-Walker to put the ball in the basket. After a breakout scoring campaign in 2025-26, NAW has carried a similar level of production into the new season. His sustainability has been crucial.

McCollum, however, hasn't had an ideal start to the year.

Flemings has seen increased responsibility as of late to counter the veteran's struggles, but if priority must stay with McCollum, Atlanta will need him to step it up playmaking-wise.
