3 Improvements Clint Capela must make for the Atlanta Hawks in 2024
The Atlanta Hawks missed the playoffs for the first time since the 2020-21 season. Not coincidentally, that was the first season that Clint Capela came to the franchise and improved the defensive structure. Having a true defensive leader makes a massive difference for a franchise.
During the 2023-24 season, Capela struggled at the defensive end of the court, and as such the Hawks struggled. It is easy to blame the likes of Trae Young. But the point guard was never known for his defense. He puts in on that end, but the rest of the team must carry the superstar and this starts with Capela.
Unfortunately for the Hawks and the Swiss star, his body was just not up to the challenge for most of the season. This led to trade rumors as without his defense, Capela is simply not worth the $22 million he is being paid next season.
The Atlanta Hawks still need Clint Capela at his best
While questions have been asked about whether Onyeka Okongwu could replace Capela as the Hawks starting center, this would be a mistake. Okongwu is undersized, only standing 6'8" which will not bode well when the Hawks play against the bigger teams in the NBA.
Capela stands 6'10" but it able to use his length to greater effect. He has a 7'4" wingspan compared to Okongwu's 7'2" wingspan but as the NBA is a league of inches, this is an important difference. However, there is still plenty of work for Capela to do on his game, lets take a look at three that he should focus on this offseason.
