Bogdan Bogdanovic is Serbia’s second-leading scorer during the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics.
However, the Atlanta Hawks swingman’s offense was vital to Serbia’s 96-85 victory over South Sudan. Bogdanovic finished the contest with a game-best 30 points, adding eight assists, four rebounds, two blocks, and two steals.
He was efficient, shooting 71.4% from the floor and going 6-for-9 from beyond the arc. His showing earned a shoutout from Hall of Famer Manu Ginobili.
“What a game by @LeaderOfHorde!” Ginobili posted on X on August 3. “Unreal!”
He was clutch too, knocking down back-to-back threes in the third quarter to fend off South Sudan’s push. Serbia pulled away in the fourth quarter, winning the frame 24-18 to secure the victory and sending South Sudan to elimination with groupmate Puerto Rico.
The win also allowed Greece to continue through.
Serbia finished second in group play behind Team USA, with both advancing to the quarterfinal round.
Serbia will face Australia first on Tuesday, August 6 in a matchup that will pit Bogdanovic against new teammate and Boomers standout Dyson Daniels, possibly in a head-to-head matchup. Daniels has also turned heads during this tournament.
If Bogdanovic and Serbia beat Australia, they will face the winner of Brazil versus Team USA.
Team USA are the reigning champions, but Australia took bronze in the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics. Neither Serbia nor Brazil made those games.
Bogdanovic and Serbia were in Rio for the 2016 Olympic games, though, taking silver home ahead of fourth-place Australia and behind only Team USA. For Bogdanovic, this is a continuation of what he showed during the 2023 FIBA World Cup.
Bogdanovic and Serbia took silver then too, behind Germany and ahead of third-place Canada.
Team USA was fourth in that contest while Australia came in 10th. Every team in the final eight has a roster with several NBA players.
On the other side, Germany will face Greece while Canada and France – who won silver in 2020 – for the right to advance setting the stage for an entertaining set of matchups leading to the gold medal game.
Hawks’ Bogdan Bogdanovic Serbia’s No. 1 all-time scorer
The game was as monumental for Bogdanovic as it was for Serbia. The veteran passed former Los Angeles Clipper guard Miloš Teodosić to become Serbia’s all-time leading scorer.
Bogdanovic’s scoring prowess is no secret.
He has also taken it upon himself to dominate the shooting leaderboards in the Hawks’ training facility. The biggest takeaway from this should probably be that Bogdanovic is healthy ahead of a big season for the Hawks.
