Atlanta Hawks announce 20-man training camp roster with notable absences
The Atlanta Hawks will open training camp on October 1.
They announced the 20-man group they are taking into camp, and there were some notable omissions, particularly given the news of the past few days and even going back to the 2024 NBA Draft. The locks are the locks.
Trae Young, Bogdan Bogdanovic, Clint Capela, De’Andre Hunter, Jalen Johnson, Kobe Bufkin, Onyeka Okongwu, Mouhamed Gueye, Vit Krejci, Seth Lundy, and Garrison Mathews all return.
There are several new additions and one Hawks prospect who is not on the roster.
Rookie No. 1 pick Zaccharie Risacher is joined by fellow newcomers Dyson Daniels, Larry Nance Jr., Cody Zeller, David Roddy, Keaton Wallace, Dominick Barlow, Kevon Harris, and Daeqwon Plowden.
Barlow, Lundy, and Wallace are the Hawks’ three two-way players. Harris and Plowden are both on exhibit-10 contracts.
The team announced they signed Joirdon Nicholas and Jordan Bowden on September 26.
Nicholas is a second-year pro who spent the 2023-24 season in the G League with the Los Angeles Lakers’ affiliate out of South Bay. Bowden is a 6-foot-5 guard who has spent time with the Brooklyn Nets organization and overseas.
Hawks rookie not on training camp roster
The other notable absence from the roster is 2024 second-round pick Nikola Djurisic, the rookie No. 43 overall selection by the Miami Heat whom the Hawks acquired on draft night.
Djurisic’s absence brings his situation into the spotlight.
Always a potential draft-and-stash option, the 6-foot-7 point-forward remains without a contract three months after being selected. Because he is not under contract, Djurisic is ineligible to participate in training camp with the Hawks.
Despite not being a part of the training camp roster, Djurisic has been around his Hawks teammates this offseason.
Djurisic also suffered a foot injury during 2K25 Summer League that required surgery.
Djurisic’s agent, Misko Raznatovic, posted on X in July that his client “planned” to return to the court at the “end of September. But the Hawks made an official announcement that an update on Djurisic would not be made until November as he recovers from his injury.
In other words, there is no rush to get a deal done and occupy a roster spot for a player who is not ready to participate.
Djurisic is clearly a part of the group and the Hawks’ plans going forward.
The Hawks also still have one preseason roster spot available. In many ways, that makes Bowden and Nicholas more striking omissions from the camp roster. But that is mostly because they were reported since neither has made an impact at the NBA level yet in their respective careers.
After hosting part of training camp in Athens at the University of Georgia campus, the Hawks will open the preseason at home against the Philadelphia 76ers on October 14.
